I have a confession to make: I used to be one of those know-it-all (some would say I still am) bro-science, meatheads, who thought the only way to get fit, a.k.a as big and strong as physically possible, was to hit the gym hard, eat tons of meat, eliminate all carbs, and basically forgo cardio and lower body lifting because they was just wastes of time. And don’t even get me started on at home workouts.
Okay, fast forward 9 years. Now that I’m well into the golden years of my 20’s, and undoubtedly wiser and more worldly, I’ve seen the error of my previous ways. No cardio, no leg days, lots of meat, and zero carbs is a sure-fire method for disaster…not to mention health consequences later in life. Only hitting big weights at the gym while stuffing myself with gargantuan quantities of food made me strong…but it also made me kind of fat. I was a train wreck, and I see it now. Thank god I got out of this phase before I left college and had to enter the real world. While I was a lucky one, I still see the less fortunate at the gym, every single day. I’m sorry, but a 45-year-old man who’s still wearing shredded cut-offs, day-glo sneakers, shorts a few inches above his ankles, giant Dr. Dre headphones, and struts around with his toothpick legs and kinda big, but still kinda fat upper body, just looks ridiculous.
So now that I’ve evolved past those primitive years, I’ve really focused on taking a balanced and holistic approach to my health. I understand the benefits of flexibility training. Yoga has become a blessing. Leg days are something to look forward to. Cardio doesn’t have to mean endless treadmill running. And, perhaps most surprisingly, at home workouts can actually kick my ass. Having shied away from at home workouts for as long as I did, I never knew their full potential…but now that I’ve accepted them with open arms, I’m fully on the home workout bandwagon and preach their benefits to anyone who will listen.
The Benefits of At Home Workouts
If you’re a reader of this blog, I’m willing to bet you are already drinking the home workout kool-aid. But for those of you who are still on the fence, lets take a quick look at some of the immediate benefits of at home workouts…
- You WILL save time by not driving to the gym
- At home workouts will help you stay consistent by eliminating obstacles between you and your workouts
- Privacy factor, for those who care
- Cost-saver, no need for a gym membership
So let’s see, save time, save money, experience more convenience and privacy in your own home….at home workouts aren’t sounding so bad, are they?
“But Matt, I have no equipment or money for expensive stuff…what do I do?”
While I still think you can get into amazing shape without any exercise equipment at all, you can certainly bump the intensity of your at home workouts by investing in, or even building, a few pieces of equipment. For those who are interested in building an at home gym on an absolutely minimal budget, I put together the home gym blueprint, which lays out exactly what you’ll need, and how you can easily make it yourself without spending a lot of cash.
How You Can Improve Your At Home Workouts
We’ve come a long way from the days of Cindy Crawford prancing around on those old VHS tapes. Nowadays, you can find pretty much any sort of fitness class, ready to streamed on any internet connected device at the push of a button. It’s a huge leap we’ve made, but it still amazes me how many people are working out the same old way. They’ll find a workout that looks appealing, print it out, place it in front of them, and mosey on through the laundry list of exercises they’ve been instructed to complete. Not to say this way of working out at home doesn’t work, but there’s a better way of doing things, as today’s blog post sets out to show you.
Study after study has demonstrated the benefits of training with a partner. Using a partner will help you workout harder, longer, and more effectively than doing so on your own. As a result, you’ll make better gains, in less time, while staying more consistent over the long-term. Sounds pretty awesome and a no-brainer, right?
But Matt, I don’t have anyone to workout with, especially not at home…what do I do?
Well check this out….those same studies also found that the value of a workout partner wasn’t limited to a real-life, living, breathing, human being. That’s right…a virtual training partner could be just as effective as a real person. Let that sink in for a second. Training with someone on a screen in front of you is going to serve the exact same benefits as laying on a bench press at the gym, having some behemoth, yell, grunt, and sweat all over you…all in the name of positive reinforcement of course.
Let’s take a quick look at what some of these studies found…
- Motivation levels increased by almost 100% when using a virtual training partner. (1)
- There was no difference between a real-life partner and a virtual partner. (1)
- Working out with a virtual partner resulted in less feelings of fatigue and longer cardio workouts. (2)
- The most effective virtual partner is works out 40% more intensely than you, thereby pushing you to match them. (3)
These findings are nothing short of amazing. What they seemingly demonstrate is exactly what the traditional fitness industry DOESN’T want you to know. Hiring an expensive personal trainer, buying a premium gym membership, and getting sucked in to the main stream fitness market is absolutely, positively NOT something you need to do to get fit. At home workouts are just as effective, and at a fraction of the cost. Now, to really turn up the dial on your at home workouts, you know what you need to do….find the perfect virtual workout partner. But how does one do that? Keep reading…
The Best Virtual Training Partner for YOU
So we should know by now the importance of a virtual training partner, and how it’s going to instantly improve the effects of our at home workouts, but how does one go about finding a virtual training partner? Well, long before this website and blog ever took shape, I knew working out with someone on a screen pushed me harder and longer. Because of this realization, I started developing hundreds of full-length personal training sessions on video. We’ve been working hard for the past 4.5 years to develop, perform, and record a HUGE array of workouts. As such we’ve built (and continue to build) a massive library of fitness workouts led by some of the best virtual training partners around, i.e. myself or some of my fitness buddies in and around San Diego.
We took things a step further by not only giving you a high-caliber virtual training partner for your at home workouts, but by adding a customization factor unseen in any other fitness product. Think about it for a second…when you watch an exercise DVD or YouTube workout video, has that video been specifically made for you and your goals, or has it been created for the masses? Take a guess.
With our recently launched customized video workout program, FitPlan, we able to build you a personal workout program by assigning you specific workouts that are targeted to your specific goals. What this means is, you’re getting the most precise workouts that will help you achieve exactly what you want to achieve, in less time. This is the same benefit a good personal trainer can provide…just without the huge cost.
So if you’re really looking to take your at home workouts to the next level, consider checking out FitPlan and seeing what it’s all about. We capitalize on two main areas that are scientifically proven to make your home workouts better; a virtual training partner that’s going to push you, and the added fitness program customization that only a real fitness trainer can provide. Two things, all rolled into one, that are absolutely going to change the way you view at home workouts forever.
