Making cardio fun is the key to sticking with any weight loss plan. No matter how determined you may be, you are not going to do something you hate indefinitely. Find a way, any way, to make cardio even slightly enjoyable, and you will be able to stick with it long term. Doing cardio 5 days a week for 60 minutes is a great way to get your heart in shape and lose pounds, but it can get a little monotonous.
Tip #1: Break up the Routine
Instead of running straight for 60 minutes try something like…
- Elliptical: 20 minutes
- HIIT training on treadmill: 20 minutes
- Stationary Bike: 20 minutes
Tip #2: Bring a Friend Along
Having a partner will always motivate you and help keep your mind off what you are doing; its been scientifically proven. Keep the conversation flowing and the pounds will be dropping in no time.
Tip #3: Bring an iPod
Listening to music is also another great way to get your mind off what you are currently doing. Go for something fast and enjoyable to help get you through the cardio. Music has the ability to make you work harder than you would if you were sitting in a silent room.
Tip #4: Interval Training
If 60 minutes seems too long for you, try doing high intensity interval training. Jog at 50% pace for 2.5 minutes, then sprint all out for half a minute. Repeat this process 10 times and you’ve burned a massive amount of calories in half the time.
Tip #5: Try a Cardio Class
Classes are a great way to get you your cardio without the monotony of running, biking, or swimming, for an hour straight. Dance fitness, Jazzercise, Zumba, etc. are all great ways to get your heart rate up, which is the goal of cardio.
